Nobody Asked About Their Followers
“Eric, how many people liked my last post?” Nobody ever asked me that from the back of my ambulance.
When I worked as a medic in New York City, I saw people on some of the worst days of their lives.
Nobody asked whether their neighbor had a nicer car. Nobody wanted to discuss their job title, their bank account or whether the algorithm was treating them fairly.
They asked for their wife. They asked for their husband. They asked if somebody had called their children.
When life suddenly becomes real, all the nonsense gets very quiet.
Money matters. Business matters. Paying the bills matters. Try paying the mortgage with positive thoughts and three inspirational quotes. Let me know how that goes.
But we can become so busy building a life that looks successful that we stop spending time with the people who make that life worth having.
And I’ve been guilty of it. I’ve answered business calls while my family was sitting beside me. I’ve worried about people who weren’t calling while ignoring the people who were already there.
“Later” is a promise none of us received.
Call somebody you love before life gives you a reason to wish you had.
Take what you need. Think about the rest.
We’re all works in progress.
